At Texas Boudoir, we entertain a full service environment with attention to the customer experience.  As such, posing guidance is an important part of making sure you’re looking your best. So while you don’t absolutely have to be familiar with these posing tips to get great shots at Texas Boudoir, doing so will increase the total number of great shots you get from your session.  And since we usually combine these different elements together for a given pose, being familiar with them means you’ll be able to put them to use easily making the shoot go faster with the best possible results!

POSING TIP 1: FEET

Your legs usually look best when you point your toes (like a ballerina).  This affects your calf muscles and buttocks and makes your legs look longer and more elegant.  High heels automatically do this by design when you’re standing. If you’re barefoot you can stand on your tippy toes to create the same effect.  If you’re sitting or lying down, simply point your feet ballerina style.

Keep toes pointed whenever possible

POSING TIP 2: LEGS

There are two main ways of standing, each projecting a different sense of femininity.

POWER GIRL STANCE

This pose conveys a combined sexiness and power.

  1. Start with feet wide apart

  2. Hips swayed whichever direction is more comfortable for you

  3. Same side shoulder dropped

GIRLIE GIRL STANCE

This pose conveys a demure, come hither look.

  1. Start with legs together

  2. Bring one leg slightly forward

  3. Bend the forward leg’s knee across and in front of other knee

  4. Keep the forward leg’s foot pointed down and ankle bent inward toward other leg

  5. Accentuate the sway in your hips that this stance naturally creates

POSING TIP 3: CORE

Your core provides two areas of control that will accentuate your look.

If exposing a bare midriff towards the camera or from the side, tighten up your stomach area and suck in (like you see in those before/after weight loss ads).  When on your back or leaning forward onto a couch, etc, arch your back by sucking in and push your bottom and shoulders back to create a curvy contour.

POSING TIP 4: HANDS

What to do with your hands depends on what we’re doing in the shot.  You could be holding something like the brim of your hat or some other prop.  You could place them somewhere on your body like your hip, leg, shoe, or you could play with your hair.

ALWAYS important — be delicate with your hands and fingers!

  • DON’T ball your hands into fists

  • DON’T keep hands stiff and claw like

  • DO relax your hands

  • DO gently separate your fingers

  • DO bend your wrists like you’re holding a glass of brandy

POSING TIP 5: ARMS AND SHOULDERS

Curves are more feminine than straight lines, therefore keep arms gracefully and gently bent at the elbows.  Lower your shoulders to create the appearance of extending the length of your neck, making you look taller and more elegant.

Drop shoulders and bend elbows gently

POSING TIP 6: MOUTH

Leaving your mouth partly open will create the classic Victoria’s Secret model pout while at the same time reducing lines and wrinkles around your mouth.  Just relax your mouth without pursing and let it fall slightly open.

POSING TIP 7: EYES

Of course we all know the eyes are the windows to the soul, so we spend a lot of time making them look absolutely stunning.  There are three places you’ll use them to look during your photo session, and one place you won’t.

DO Look at the Camera

Obviously.  That’s everyone’s most common shot, and of course we do those too.  Engaging the camera is a personal invitation to the observer, your intended target.  This is where you look through the camera to say “come to me, I want you!”.

DO Look Away

Looking away makes you artwork.  It says to the observer I don’t know or care that you’re there.  I’m in my own world, or you’re a voyeur into it. This has it’s own charm and sexiness.

DO Look Down

Looking down evokes a special sense — something demure, dreamy, ethereal.  When the light is especially gauzy and delicate, there is nothing more beautiful.

DON’T Look at the No Lookin’ Zone

This is a donut shaped region around the camera.  If you look there, you’re looking vaguely in the direction of the camera, but clearly not AT the camera making you look oddly zoned out.   This creates a disconnected, disconcerting feeling to the observer that you’ll want to avoid.

Look at the camera or away, not “near” the camera

POSING TIP 8: HAIR

While the only constant in fashion is change and hairstyles along with it, a woman’s hair is always a powerful tool of expression in her arsenal.  The longer your hair, the more we can do with it. Nevertheless, merely playing with it regardless of length is always sexy. Doing so conveys a playful sexiness.

But shaking your hair vigorously has two different unrelated effects.  First, it creates a beautiful and sexy *motion* in the shot.  But equally important, it has a rejuvenating effect on your expression.  Your eyes brighten and your smile comes alive.

CAUTION!  Shaking your hair while standing on tippy toes or in the already unstable “Girlie Girl Stance” can make you lose your balance.  At any time if you feel yourself losing your balance, break the pose and catch yourself. Safety first, beauty second!

Don’t worry about memorizing these tips, there will not be a pop quiz.  But we will cover all of it during the course of the shoot so merely familiarizing yourself with these posing tips will give you a great head start in getting your sexy on!  Check our awesome portfolio for examples of these tips in practice.
